A couple of milestones coming up

On Twitter I will have 500 followers soon.  Its been fun getting to this point.  I am mainly gaining followers by talking to people.  There aren’t any gimmicks or tricks being used. I am just engaging people.  On HubPages, I am going to hit 1000 hub views soon.  I haven’t been contributing to HubPages like Ty, but its nice to reach this milestone.

I just hit 150 followers on Digg.  Digg is a major source of my news.  I am very happy that I was able to build a voice and a following on this site.

Using Simple Twitter Connect for WordPress

I realize that a good commenting system is a must for any credible blog.  When I first started this blog I punted on this and allowed comments from anyone.  However, I did moderate the comments.  I was mostly just checking for spam.  I know I could have used Aksimet Spam Detection, but it didn’t seem like a great fit for me initially.  I was just blogging what I felt was important, and did think paying a monthly fee for spam detection was worth it.

Recently the spam was too much.  I changed my settings to make everyone register to post a comment.  This caused my users a ton of issues.  After a couple of friends and colleagues stated this was a problem, I felt I had to fix it.  I wanted a very tight integration with Twitter.  There were tons of alternative options for this.  I researched using Facebook Connect, a WordPress.com login, and OpenID.

After all my research I found Simple Twitter Connect.  It took a couple of minutes to setup.  Hopefully you like the new Twitter button to tweet posts and the ability to leave a comment with your Twitter account.  If you’re looking to add Twitter as an option for comments to your WordPress blog, you may want to check out Simple Twitter Connect.

Follow me on Twitter and get a prize!

Now that I got your attention.  The prize will be an ally in the future!   Yes, you now will have a person to bounce ideas off of.  I am pretty knowledgeable about a lot of things.  A few people told me, “You are my phone a friend!”  Everyone needs a phone a friend. Period.

Where did this idea come from?  I had a very good conversation with Mark Ruiz about this.  Mark has over 26,000 followers and I asked him how did he get so many followers.  I am paraphrasing here, but Mark stated he follows people that tweet phases about what he tweets about.  When they follow him back, he send them an introductory email.  Hmm… that makes a lot of sense.  Twitter to him is about finding like minded individuals and making a connection.  It appears he built his following shaped by his own interest.  This may have seemed very simple to and a no brainer to Mark, but this was a moment of Zen for me.

I would have never looked at Twitter that way.  Up until now I followed my friends and people that followed me.  Now I will take it to the next level to form connections.  Thanks Mark, you cleared this whole Twitter thing up for me.
